American Impressionism is a style of painting consisting of loose brush work and a vivid color palette. In the late 19th and early 20th century, American artists were introduced to the impressionist style by such European artists as Claude Monet. The loose and colorful style caught fire and quickly became a staple for early 20th century art.
Pictured here is a piece by Walt Kuhn, best known for his cartoonist, draftsman, and printmaking skills. More predominantly known for his haunting portraits of circus and vaudeville performers, Kuhn's early work in landscape and still life established him within the American Impressionism genre of work.
