Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish architect, designer, and water colorist in the late 1800's through the early 1900's. His architectural design was influenced by emerging Asian style and modernist ideas which led to the use of simple forms and natural materials. Mackintosh was a member of "The Four". This group consisted of prominent members of the Glasgow School Movement, influential modern artists who began working in the 1870's (Wikipedia, 2010).
