History of the Plush Teddy Bear

The lovable plush teddy bear has a surprising history. In 1902, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt refused to kill a American Black Bear tethered to a tree while on a hunting trip with the Governor of Mississippi, Andrew H. Longino. The incident was immortalized in a political cartoon that ran in The Washington Post. A shop owner, Morris Michtom, saw the cartoon and was inspired to create a soft bear toy, soon dubbed "Teddy's Bear" after the president himself. The plush teddy bear was born!
